# Sprint management

BetterBoard shows sprint state on cards and lets you move work items between sprints directly from the board — without opening each work item individually.

## Sprint display on cards

When the Sprint field is enabled in display fields, each card shows its current sprint as a chip. Sprint chips have visual states:

- **Active sprint**: blue half circle
- **Future sprint**: grey dashed circle
- **Backlog**: no icon shown (work item not in any sprint)
- **Closed sprint**: green circle with a tick

## Moving work items to a sprint

**Via inline editing**: Click the sprint chip on a card, then select a different sprint from the picker.

**Via drag**: If the board is grouped by Sprint, drag the work item card to the target sprint's column.

**Via bulk action**: Select multiple work items, then use the bulk action bar → **Move to sprint** → choose target sprint.

## Filtering by sprint

Use the Sprint filter to scope the board to specific sprints:

- **Active sprint**: shows only work items in the current active sprint
- **Named sprint**: pick any sprint by name
- **Backlog**: work items not in any sprint

Combined with the `is current user` assignee filter, a "My active sprint" view can be created on a shared board that personalizes automatically for each viewer.

## Sprint column view

Group the board by Sprint to get one column per sprint:

1. Open Settings → **Columns** → **Group by** → Sprint
2. BetterBoard creates columns for active, future, and recent sprints
3. Drag work items between sprint columns to change their sprint assignment

Toggle **Show closed sprints** in column settings to include or hide completed sprints.

## Permissions

Moving work items to sprints requires the **Manage sprints** permission in Jira. If you don't have this permission, sprint chips are read-only and the sprint picker is disabled.

> **Note**
>
> Creating, starting, or closing sprints is not supported in BetterBoard — those operations happen in Jira's native backlog. BetterBoard is a board view; sprint lifecycle management stays in Jira.
