# Creating and managing boards

Each Jira space can have multiple BetterBoard boards. You might have one for daily standups, one for sprint planning, and a private one for your personal view — all within the same space.

## Creating a board

1. Open BetterBoard in any Jira space
2. Click the board name in the top-left switcher to open the board list
3. Click **New board**
4. Enter a name and choose visibility (Shared or Private)
5. Click **Create** — the board opens immediately with default settings

The new board inherits no settings from existing boards. Start fresh or jump to Settings to configure columns, display fields, and filters.

## The board switcher

The board switcher (top left) lists all boards available to you in the current space — both your private boards and all shared boards.

- Shared boards are visible to everyone with space access
- Private boards show only to you
- Drag boards in the switcher to reorder them

Click any board in the switcher to navigate to it instantly.

## Renaming a board

1. Open the board switcher
2. Hover over the board you want to rename
3. Click the **Edit** (pencil) icon that appears to the right
4. Type the new name and press **Enter**

Board names are visible to everyone who can see the board. Choose names that clearly describe the board's purpose — for example, "Sprint board (current)" or "Triage queue — unassigned".

> **Note**
>
> You can also rename a board from anywhere using the command palette — press **⌘K** (or **Ctrl+K**) and search for "Rename board". See [Keyboard Shortcuts](/betterboard/work-faster/keyboard-shortcuts/) for more.

## Duplicating a board

BetterBoard doesn't have a dedicated duplicate button, but you can create a copy by saving your current board's configuration as a new board:

1. Open the board you want to copy
2. Make any configuration changes in **Display** settings (or leave them as-is to get an exact copy)
3. Click the dropdown arrow on the right side of the **Save** button
4. Choose **Save as a new board**
5. Enter a name and choose visibility for the new board

The new board is fully independent — changes to it don't affect the original.

## Deleting a board

1. Open the board switcher
2. Hover over the board you want to delete
3. Click the **Delete** (trash) icon that appears to the right
4. Confirm deletion

> **Caution**
>
> Deleting a board is permanent. The board configuration (columns, fields, filters) is removed. Jira work items themselves are not affected.

## Board limits

There is no hard limit on the number of boards per space. Boards work great with up to 1,000 work items — after that you may notice longer loading times. In practice, teams find that 3–5 boards per space covers most workflows without creating confusion.

Common board setups that work well:

- **Team standup** — shared, grouped by assignee, filtered to current sprint
- **Sprint planning** — shared, grouped by status, no filter (shows the full backlog)
- **My work** — private, filtered to "Assignee is Me", grouped by priority
- **Triage queue** — shared, filtered to unassigned work items, sorted by creation date
